Recommended for 1 CPE in Business Management at the basic level.

The program is suitable at the basic level for individuals who have routine interactions with others that could potentially lead to contentious conversations. OK ETHICS makes no guarantees as it is up to the individual practitioner to determine relevance to their specific area of practice.

    Program Description:

In a pluralistic society in which poor communication thrives, conflict is inevitable. This is especially true in the high stakes field of medicine and patient care. But it is true far beyond that context. Acquiring the tools and virtues necessary to mediate conflict is necessary to flourishing as individuals and organizations.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Certain moral virtues are prerequisites to handling conflict well.

    2. A practice called “diagnostic listening” is a key skill in conflict mediation.

    3. Having other tools in your toolbox can help ensure successful mediation (e.g., find the source of anger, focus on interests).

    About the Speaker:

Derrick is INTEGRIS Health’s clinical ethicist. He has been a nurse since 2005. Since that time, he has served with his family as missionaries in North India, served as a nurse in Oklahoma, and served as a nursing supervisor of a COVID unit during the height of the pandemic. His passion for clinical ethics was stoked at INTEGRIS Health through ethics committee involvement. Derrick is a nationally certified healthcare ethics consultant. He obtained his Master of Science in Bioethics degree from Albany Medical College in New York. He has published in and reviewed for peer-reviewed journals. His passion is to help INTEGRIS Health become the most trustworthy name in healthcare as we strive toward ethical excellence across disciplines, throughout the organization, and throughout each patient's experience. He now lives in Yukon with his wife of 22 years, his two children, and a niece.
