      Program Description:

The stories of FTX and Theranos seem very similar. Both include charismatic founders who went on to trick some of the most sophisticated investors into believing a lie. Both included implementing new technology for the common good and wanted to change the world. Both founders are now in prison. Despite of these similarities, there are differences in the ethical behavior of those inside the companies which impacted how quickly each company collapsed and how much damage was done. We will explore the different ways that individuals inside these two companies responded to common ethical threats and how that increased or decreased the damage done to investors and consumers.

      Key Takeaways:

      • Identify how conflicts of interest, subjugation of judgement, and other key ethical conflicts can appear in outwardly healthy-looking companies.
      • Recognize the role that integrity plays in combating these ethical threats.
      • Develop tools to respond appropriately to these ethical threats.

      About the Speaker:

Ashley Plyushko's journey to becoming the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Accountancy Board is a testament to her extensive career in both municipal and state government. Armed with degrees in history and political science from Oklahoma Baptist University and accounting from Colorado State University – Global Campus, Ashley embarked on a path that led her through various roles.

After a brief stint as a Legislative Assistant in the Oklahoma House of Representatives, Ashley transitioned to the Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES) as a budget analyst in the Statewide Budget Division, where she initially worked as the budget analyst for the Health and Human Services cabinet, followed by the Education cabinet. Her commitment and passion for state finance led her to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in 2017.

Ashley's municipal experience includes serving as the Assistant Finance Director for the City of Shawnee and eventually rising to the position of Finance Director and City Treasurer. While in that role, she spearheaded initiatives to enhance financial transparency by making budgetary information accessible to the public. Her efforts ensured that taxpayers could easily track how their funds were allocated and utilized. Prior to her current role, she held the position of State Chief Financial Officer for OMES.

During her time as the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Accountancy Board, several initiatives have been launched to modernize communications, reach Oklahoma’s CPAs and CPAs-to-be, and lower barriers. As an active speaker, she works to communicate the Board’s mission in universities, society chapters, and other venues.
